Happy New Year!

Happy new year and welcome back to school!  I hope you were all able to enjoy the company of friends and family as well as the peace and joy of the season.  Thank you very much for the generous and yummy gifts.  Please ask your child to share the thank you/welcome back card he/she should have in the planner pocket.

Meet Our New Student

Alwen joins us from Langley.  She tells me she likes her new class and school and has been made to feel very welcome by her classmates!  We are happy to have her in our class!

Time to Review Our Times and Division Facts

Time to Review Our Times Facts and Division Facts Too

Every Thursday starting this week the students will have a multiplication and division facts quiz.  We are starting with 2X up to 2X10 and ÷ 2 up to 20 ÷ 2.  Your child will write what she/he needs to study in the planner on Mondays.

Help your child by having him/her
1.  skip count forward and backwards ie. 0, 2, 4 ... 20 and 20, 18, 16 ... 0
2.  draw a clock (your child can explain) and say the facts in order then out of order.  Time him to show the improvement.
3.  use flash cards
4.  use multiplication and division apps (math drills lite has been recommended by a parent)
5.  complete the handouts I provide
6.  continue to review the tables (a few minutes a day is most effective)

Thank you for your support!

Grade 4/5 in Action

The students are enjoying gymnastics.  What they may not know is that after 3 weeks, they will notice how much stronger and more agile they have become .

A Busy First Week Back

Although some were a little sleepy, all of the students were excited on the first day back to school.  From the stories they shared, it sounds like all had a good holiday.  The week began with a little playtime in a little snow.

We began our Science unit (Forces and Machines) by building roller coasters.    The challenge was to have a marble complete a 1 metre course which had to have a rise part way along the course.  Watching the students overcome problems was interesting and rewarding.

The students also explored how different surfaces affect how high a ball bounces and how forces affect direction and speed of an object's movement.

And art was tasty and fun!

It was decided this was the only way to finish off the whipped cream!
