The Federal Election
The Grade 5 students have been learning about the Federal Government. All of the students, in teams, created posters about the Federal Election. On these posters, they identified who the candidates are locally and federally, party platforms (promises), what the students feel is important in making Canada an even better place, and the importance of voting.

Compassion
The students have been learning about compassion by noticing acts of compassion in others and themselves, illustrating what compassion might look like at home, school, and in the community, and by making posters and even a slide show. Each week I will publish one of the posters made by the students.
Already October
It's hard to believe a month has passed. The students are adjusting well to new routines and challenges. I'm impressed by their efforts to work together. Just yesterday I observed them organizing themselves into soccer teams - 4s versus 5s (with a few key Grade 5 players joining the small group of 4s).
Our class has taken a leadership role in a green initiative at Brooksbank. Each week the students collect recycled paper bins from all of the classrooms, office etc. and empty them into large bins which they then take to the curb for pickup. As well, students from our class monitor the recycle stations after lunch to make sure items are placed in the correct bins - plastics, garbage, and compost. The students have received a number of compliments from teachers and a special visit from Mr. Chan, who acknowledged the importance of their work and the effort they are putting into their jobs.

Thank You and Happy Summer
It has been quite a year! I have enjoyed working with your children very much. It has been a treat to
be a small part of their lives and to witness the incredible growth - academically and socially and, yes, they've grown bigger. It amazes me how much I have learned from their questions and comments and how they can make me smile and laugh. Each one has had something unique and wonderful to offer. Thank you, children!

And thank you for the very generous gift card and beautiful flower planter as well as other gifts, kind notes, and thoughtful messages from the children. I feel very blessed.
