1966 to 2016

It was nice to see many of you at the 60th anniversary and time capsule unveiling.  Too bad the time capsule contents were smelly and sludgy.  I hope you were able to see the posters the students made.  There have certainly been changes since 1966.

Story Telling

When I told the students they were going to tell (as opposed to read) stories to the class, they asked incredulously, "Without books?  Can we just have a book in front of us in just in case?"

I think they surprised themselves to find out they are natural story tellers.  Some made props and all used expression and gestures to make the stories come to life.  After presenting to our class, a number have volunteered to tell their stories to their buddy class.  Mrs. Kristensen told me the buddies love having them tell

Track and Field Achievements

All students who participated in Track and Field should be congratulated for their efforts!  Ms. Wong and I had the pleasure of working with the sprinters and I'm happy to say a number of students from Division 5 participated.  They showed up for every practise on time and ran and ran.  I had fun and I think they did too.

A number of Division 5 students qualified for the zone meets and a few even qualified for Swaangard.  A relay team consisting of Tyler, Elliott, Jackson, and Bruce won 3rd place.  Tyler also won 3 (yes 3!) more events - long jump, high jump, and 100 m. sprints.  Congratulations to all of the participants!

Happy Fathers' Day

to all the great dads of Division 5 students.  We hope you appreciate the heartfelt messages in your computer card and the message below.  (Your child might have to help you decipher it.)  Enjoy your day!

What do Juice Boxes and Swimming have in Common?

As you are probably aware, the students of Division 5 have been responsible for collecting, organizing, and recycling at Brooksbank.  They took the initiative to separate refundables from other recyclables.  The money they earned is enough to pay for a year end swimming party.  There should be a notice in your child's planner.  A prompt reply is requested. Parents are welcome to join us.  Drivers are required.  Thank you!

Work on the Waterfront

Brendan from Vancouver Pile Company visited our class.

 This company has a part in building just about any type of permanent structure in the water such as bridges and docks.  It was interesting learning how seismic, tidal, and weather conditions all have to be considered in the design and construction.  Brenda presented each of us with a baseball cap.

Good Luck Ms. Wong, We Will Miss You!

It's hard to believe tomorrow is Ms. Wong's last day with Division 5.  Her caring nature, dedication, and hard work has been greatly appreciated.  The children presented their flowers, a signed frisbee, and a booklet with a page completed by each student.  We then enjoyed yummy treats and playtime.  Thank you, Parents, for helping with the surprise celebration. Ms. Wong will miss the children too!

Harbour Boat Cruise

We were lucky to have beautiful weather today as we cruised around Burrard Inlet from bridge to bridge.  We watched the waterfront at work and learned about the many operations taking place.

Pastor Bruce and Adeline's Visit

Last Friday, we ended off our Social Studies unit with a visit from Pastor Bruce and his wife Adeline. Bruce and Adeline are both from the Haida Gwaii community and are survivors of the residential school system. Bruce and Adeline spoke to the class with grace and compassion about their harrowing childhoods; both were taken away from their families at a very young age and were forced to attend an Indian Residential School. Both endured horrible circumstances, but the one thing they emphasized was the power of resilience and the importance of healing in order to lead a healthy and happy life. Their message to the children was to appreciate what they have and to make the most of their education.
