Last week the whole school celebrated Gerry's birthday. Our class played an important role making a card (which every student and staff member signed), making a banner, welcoming Gerry and Molly, helping to lead the singing of "Happy Birthday", and presenting the gift and card. A slide show with pictures of Gerry then and now and photos showing the evolution of the garden was shown and the whole school counted to 99. (That seemed to take forever!) Molly and Gerry were thrilled!
The next day Mike McCardle from CTV featured Gerry on The Last Word.

The Great Debate
Mayor Sarah facilitated a debate in the council chambers. Those arguing for the construction of a road beyond Mount Seymour to Whistler included truckers, housing developers, Hydro representatives (who proposed a new dam site) etc. while those opposed to the construction of a road included ornithologists, 1st Nations people, wilderness tour operators etc. All had a chance to give their reasons and then there was a question period. It was a lively debate! Mayor Sarah made the difficult decision to not allow the road to be built. Ironically both sides cheered.
Besides developing research and debating skills, the students learned the difficulty government faces to make the right choices.
